World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27 every year since 1980 all around the world. The UNWTO (The World Tourism Organization) is a United Nations agency. Promotion of responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism and stimulate economic growth and job creation is UNWTO’s main agenda. In 2009, India was elected to the Executive Council of the UNWTO and had been in the Chairmanship twice since then. The theme for World Tourism Day 2021 is ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth’. As the tourism industry slowly bounces back amidst the lingering perils of the pandemic and register a positive growth; this is highly appropriate theme at this time. Tourism and Inclusive Growth Tourism is all about people and experiences. It creates thousands of jobs, develops the infrastructure of a country, and offers opportunities and is a driver of sustainable growth in rural areas. It creates a cultural exchange between tourists and local people. It also protects heritage, from National Parks to World Heritage Sites, tourism revenues help safeguard cultural and natural heritage. Tourism produces ‎employment benefits in many related sectors – from construction to ‎energy and from agriculture to telecommunications, it is considered an essential element for economic development and poverty alleviation in emerging economies. Growing inequality is one of the biggest economic, social and political challenges of our time. On top of that, millions of people were pushed into extreme poverty due to the current pandemic.
