A weekend of intense programming, creative thinking and problem solving at THack hackathon in Hamburg resulted in one more app to contribute to the travel ecosystem. This hackathon sought out to create tech solutions for the growing demand for digital innovation in the airline industry. More than 60 developers travelled to Hamburg to try their hand at developing airline applications and compete for prizes worth more than €20,000. All developers were given access to more than 150 of Sabre’s APIs within Sabre Dev Studio. Meet Me Halfway was recognized as the winning application. The social planning service, developed by Polish-based Cometari, enables leisure and business travelers to find suitable meeting places around the world based on flight and hotel availability. The innovative solution was created using a range of Sabre APIs including Destination Finder,Instaflights Search, Low Fare Forecast and Theme Airport Lookup. Combined, the APIs enabled Cometari to provide a wide range of destinations and fares to suit users’ needs within the app. “The hackathon highlighted how much energy and passion there is among the wider developer community to create apps and services that solve common travel industry challenges,” said Antonella Vecchio, vice president, Online at Sabre Travel Network. “Innovation can come from anywhere, and we want to make it easier and more accessible for the global developer community to build apps that reinvent travel.” As part of its prize, the four-person Cometari team had the opportunity to meet some of the airline industry’s most influential organizations and present Meet Me Halfway to attendees at IATA World Passenger Symposium, a biennial airline industry event focused on trends and issues within commercial aviation.
